Glendalough Heritage Site
Glendalough is the English translation of the
Irish name ‘Gleann da Locha’ which translates to
‘The Valley of the two lakes’. Glendalough is
steeped in history and beauty and famous for its
outstanding historical and archaeological features.
Glendalough was a place of tranquillity for St.
Patrick and St. Kevin.
Set in a glacial valley the upper and lower lake
are a stroll from the monastic ruins where you can
explore the 8th and 12th century ruins of monastic
catherdrals, churches, crosses and the famous 34m
high round tower. In the 6th Century, St. Kevin
founded a monastery, whose fame as a centre of
learning spread throughout Europe.
There is an interpretative centre at the entrance
to the valley where visitors can learn about the
history, archaeology and wildlife of the valley.
Guided ecological tours of the Wicklow Mountains
National Park are available on request. Coffee shops
and craft shops abound in the village and are open
most of the year. Tel: +353 (0)404
